Meeting Notes
- RLAN Status Updates
- Current maintenance are to permanently enable blocks for Intrusion Prevention System (IPS). Primarily to block BitTorrent.
- There is a meeting this Wednesday (2/3/2016) to discuss RLAN delivery option pricing with IT management.
- For more info see RLAN-client-options.pdf and http://www.cns.vt.edu/data_departmentRate.html
- Brad announced that testing is going on to enable all connections (RLAN, Open, and phone) over the Avaya phones. New Avaya firmware may enable this.
- Steve commented that 802.1x needs more testing but should be the direction we go with the RLAN.
- Brad said that system administrators of the departments that are using the RLAN have a difficult time configuring computers for the current connection to the RLAN. There are issues with the vlan to trunk delivery option.
- For users that want just a single computer for everything will need two network interface cards (NICs) installed.
- RLAN VPN is working fine with about 2-5 users total.
- Steve said that there are plans to start a project later this year that will allow IPv6 on the RLAN.
- RLAN Adoption
- We need to reduce barriers to entry/joining the RLAN to make it more palatable to departments.
- Human Resources (HR) is not on the RLAN at all.
- Controller Office has a minimal number of users on the RLAN.
- Registrar has all but two employees on the RLAN (approximately 30 users total).
- Bursar has most employees on the RLAN (approximately 50 users total).
- Financial Aid has a new system administrator which will slow the adoption rate there until they become more familiar with the RLAN.
- How can we increase the RLAN adoption rate?
- Mandate its use?
- Offer the first year free?
- Open forum
- Steve explained that he and Gary will represent NI&S at these RLAN project meetings and that Brian Jones and Ron Keller will not be attending on a regular basis.
