Maintenance Restricted Dates discussion (see draft attached):

Suggestion to add a membership list to the wiki site.

Group will vet requests from constituents to determine impacted systems. Only systems that are directly impacted need be restricted from maintenance in most cases.

NI&S Data Center Management:

NetApp maintenance to be scheduled next Friday, July 26th @ 8pm.

Reserving a large window, but hope this will take much less time than allotted.  And of course, "expected to be transparent to end users".

The proposed changes are to upgrade the NetApp OS, disconnect unused shelves, and remove the former Exchange-centric nodes from the cluster.  We are currently working to prepare the NetApp for these changes, removing ownership and storage virtual machines from disk shelves and filers to be removed.  I've been assured that the physical processes can all take place on-line without interruption.  The OS update should be rolling, with the typical stipulation that some delay or temporary disconnect may occur during fail-over.

There's nothing apparently intervening on the calendar.  Obviously, I'd like to know if there are any potential causes for pause rather quickly as I'll have to send notification out on Friday to make the 7-day advance notice.

NEO/NII:

Data Center migration is complete! Over 30 sprints completed!

Also, a VPN update is imminent:

Overview

A new release of the Remote Access VPN service will be placed into production on Thursday morning, July 25, 2019.

The new VPN service is similar to the existing legacy service, with the following changes and enhancements:

  • VPN hardware refresh. The legacy hardware will be “end of life” in December 2019
  • Connection profile URLs have changed to facilitate a controlled migration intended to minimize user impact during the transition: "vpn.nis.vt.edu" from "ras.cns.vt.edu"
  • Full IPv6 support is now available on "All Traffic" and "VT Traffic" (split tunnel) profiles for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS platforms.  The legacy service did not support IPv6 on the split tunnel service

Timeline

  1. Wednesday, July 24, 2019: Roll out new VPN packages to VT administered devices through BigFix
  2. Thursday, July 25, 2019: Roll out new Connection profiles of All Traffic and VT Traffic
  3. Thursday, Aug 1, 2019: ras.cns.vt.edu (legacy) will no longer serve connection profiles. It will remain active solely for transitioning users to the new connection profiles of vpn.nis.vt.edu
  4. Sep 10, 2019: Decommission ras.cns.vt.edu and its role for automatic provisioning of connection profiles

During the transition (July 25 to Sept 10, 2019), the new connection profiles of vpn.nis.vt.edu will be delivered automatically from ras.cns.vt.edu. Once users connect to vpn.nis.vt.edu, ras.cns.vt.edu connection profiles will be deleted. This capability will exist until September 10, 2019.

CCS:

Patch maintenance was last week. Office365 impacts was mostly Exchange Online (and perhaps affected calendaring as well).

DBAA:

Regular scheduled Banner maintenance is this Sunday.

TLOS:

Will renew Lynda.com, but is now owned by LinkedIn so will become LinkedInLearning.com. Set to bring up new system on August 8th, so some downtime may be experienced during the transition. May also be some changes related to affiliations (such as Alumni no longer being allowed to login.)

SIS:

code.vt.edu will be down for maintenance from 0800 to 1700 EDT on Sunday, August 11th, 2019.

During this maintenance the service will be migrated to AWS and

upgraded to GitLab EE (Enterprise Edition).

Though we will be running GitLab EE after the upgrade, only CE

(Community Edition) features will be available. This will be the case

until we have determined our license needs and eligibility.
