Bill Dooley-DBAA: On Sunday, May 23 from 8am - 12noon kernel patches will be applied to the OS for the Banner production database server (Robin). Databases that will be unavailable during the maintenance are:

The following production web applications will also be unavailable during this maintenance: AIS Application Promotion (AAP)

Also on May 23rd, 9am-10am Production Warehouse DBs will also be unavailable; this will affect Webdist.

Kim Homer-SETI: On Sunday May 23 0600-0800, the database platform for auth.vt.edu will change from single, shared Oracle instance on Joker to a 2-node HA PostgreSQL setup dedicated to CAS. DBAA will continue to provide the usual high level of support for the new platform and we expect much better throughput and availability with a dedicated HA database setup. There will be minor interruptions to services during the upgrade, but we expect total CAS downtime to be minimal. This change should not cause any interoperability problems with existing applications, although you may want to test your applications with cas-pprd.middleware.vt.edu, which is using the new database platform.

MIG: NTLM authentication will be hardened. The Microsoft Implementation Group will be hardening security on the VT Active Directory this Sunday, May 16th, beginning at 10 a.m.  Here is Marc's description of the maintenance, followed by his post to the Techsupport list:
It will entail hardening several security features of the AD which may adversely impact old or down-level clients such as Macs or Linux
systems. It requires some changes to group policy and manual restarts of each root AD (3 in all) but it will be a rolling restart.
Details were posted to techsupport (and will be again) with the urging to test their solutions in our dev/test environments.

MW: ED 3.0 coming in June; no firm dates yet.

CAS upgrade also on the agenda; also no firm dates but both CAS and ED will be updated before fall classes begin.

David Adams-LT: Learning Technologies will be upgrading Scholar to a new release of Sakai on Saturday, May 15. Shutdown will occur at 5am; software update by 7am. OCS will continue testing. 12noon things should be back up. Web site is saying all day to be safe. This has been done twice on preprod and will be doing it once more before this weekend.

Systems/research:  Audit testing possibilities; May 14-June 4, 2010. Work has begun on the Data Center power upgrade. A small building will be constructed in the parking lot behind the building.
