Meeting Notes
- Review action items and comments from 20130722 - July 22, 2013 RLAN Project Status Meeting
- Action item: Brian will ask Christine Morrison to work on an MOU for firewall management between NI&S and ITSO.
- Brian talked with Christine to initiate the creation of an MOU.
- Action item: Rich will contact Vivian Rich to get the AISB RLAN connections completed.
- No status available.
- Action item: A decision on access to the RLAN using the open campus VPN needs to be made by the ITSO.
- Tabled until Randy is present to discuss.
- Status of AISB RLAN connections/orders
- Greg checked with Vivian Rich and was told as far as she knew these were installed. Vivian thought there was as many as 6 RLAN connections.
- Discuss how notifications (e.g., network problems) are provided to the users and ITSO
- Issues with the RLAN network that occured today (8/5/2013) are related to the transition work done last Friday (8/2/2013) evening.
- Some network issues can be detected by CNS (routine monitoring of RLAN network), others must be reported by the end users.
- The ITSO is going to do some high-level monitoring for connectivity to critical sites (e.g., wachovia.com) from the RLAN. Issues discovered will alert ITSO staff who will then triage the issue to gather as much information as possible and to determine if the issue is with the network, firewall, or ITSO equipment. If network issue it will be reported to the Network Operations Center (NOC). Once reported to the NOC, 4Help is notified and can update the "Current Computing Status" message on computing.vt.edu and post RLAN specific message. If ITSO determines an issue with their equipment and it will take some time to fix then the ITSO will notify the NOC.
- There was some discussion about getting the RLAN connected to the "core" VT network (juniper). CNS says for that to happen someone needs to fund the 10Gb connection needed.
- ITSO needs to be able to look up RLAN addresses in Address Finder. When can that be implemented?
- ITSO should be able to see them all now.
- This uses NetRecon which is not 100% reliable.
- Report problems using the CNS JIRA.
- Discuss security final review (done by Internal Audit)
- Remember since the ITSO is involved in this project the security reviews are being done by Internal Audit.
- It was agreed that a single final security review would be requested, as opposed to the 4 initial security reviews done.
- Action item: Greg will initiate the final security review and request input from project leads and team members.
- Further discussion of RLAN VPN?
- Tabled until Randy is present to discuss.
- Open Forum
- Nothing new to discuss.
