TLOS:
TLOS is in the process, in coordination with Sycom engineers, of migrating the local VT WebEx infrastructure to new Cisco hardware. This new system will be brought online in parallel with the one currently in use and then a migration will be performed. TLOS has been informed by Sycom that there should be no interruption in service to end users during the transition.
TLOS Dev is planning to deploy some very small updates to the retiring Scholar code on either 08/20 or 08/27 (Saturdays) to facilitate the migration to Canvas. They will just merely be deployed in the weekly bounce that happens on Scholar from 5am -> 7am and no users should notice. Due to Load Balancing, this should be a smooth transition.
SIS:
Duo has clarified that the update "My Settings and Devices" described at https://duo.com/blog/self-service-portal-update-and-new-device-management-portal will occur on August 11, 2016, between 10:00pm - 11:59pm. There is no expected down time.
This is DUO production, which will impact ALL VT Duo instances (DEV, PPRD, and PROD). After this a fix for shared iFrame issues will be done.
Aug 15: F5 production change (Middleware Web Services offline during maintenance window starting at 6am)
Aug 29: Production DAT will begin using 2Fa (no more eToken! and there was great rejoicing!)
Aug 29: MyVT Accounts 2.1 - redesigned workflow for PIDGen to more easily get users to enroll in 2-factor, bug fixes.
NI&S:
Effective August 12, 2016, a wireless network service pilot will be activated in residence halls. The new service will allow game consoles, media streaming devices, smart TVs, and similar equipment to be connected to the VirginiaTech wireless network in the residence halls. Also referred to as wireless commodity devices, this equipment lacks the necessary functionality to connect to eduroam or to use the web based captive portal. Printers will specifically not be allowed. Registered devices will not connect to the VirginiaTech network outside residence halls, so users are advised to not link their laptops, telephones, or tablets for this reason.
Concurrent with wireless network service changes set to be activated in residence halls this Friday, August 12, 2016, the Departmental Sponsored Guest Wireless Account Management login page will receive a slight modification. The new wording will address a wider variety of wireless users registration needs.
At the top of the account management login page, the text across the image of the Pylons (and again, just below the image) currently reads:
Effective Friday, August 12:
Guest Wireless Sponsors will continue to login to the account management service (guestmanager.nis.vt.edu) the same way, using the same Username and Password fields, then clicking Submit.
DBAA: Normal ORACLE patches coming this Sunday.
ECS: Rate limiting/throttling process is in testing now. Is only "watching" now, but will begin throttling next week. Home grown code.
On August 15th, InBox will be engaged for non-profits and EDU sites. This is a different interface requiring a client download which will change the web interface. Will help with indexing and sorting email messages. Allows a host of features including AI features which will interface with calendar.
CCS: Patch Tuesday; may not be expedited as nothing too critical.
DCM: A generator load transfer needs to be scheduled.
IT A&P: Listserv has been decommissioned! And Scholar project sites are no longer able to be created (as of July 17th); being routed to Google Sites or Sharepoint. May 17, 2017 is still the decommissioning date for Scholar.
NI&S CNO: Old Load Balancers are on the list to be decommissioned. Network maintenance will be paused on August 15th to prepare for start of semester.
NI&S AM: The ATLAS database will be unavailable from 0600-0730 on Friday, August 12 due to system and database maintenance. Problems with any applications that use ATLAS after 0730 should be reported through normal channels.
ITSO: Restricted DNS service process will begin in October. Full details will be announced at this fall's DCSS.
