A desirable by-product of the soft PDC is to have the credential comply with standards that would result in Virginia Tech achieving InCommon Silver status. See http://www.incommonfederation.org/docs/assurance/InC_Bronze-Silver_IAP_1.0.1.pdf  for Silver profile requirements. See http://www.incommonfederation.org/assurance/ for more information about InCommon identity assurance. Virginia Tech's draft "Standard for Levels of Assurance of Personal Digital Identities" designates a personal digital certificate stored as a software token at LOA 3, if it meets certain requirements. If the soft PDC meets NIST 800-63 LOA 3 standards, it should exceed the Silver requirements.

The Virginia Tech Police have indicated a need to send encrypted e-mails, and are currently using "free" certificates from Comodo. The VT Soft PDCs would help them, according to Georgiy Kolomiyets. We need to contact them when we get further along with the project and enlist Georgiy's help in deploying the certs to the VT Police.

IT groups who have volunteered to be early adopters:

    ISTO - Randy Marchany

Converged Technologies - Brenda van Gelder

    Enterprise Systems - Debbie Fulton

VT Applied Research Corporation - Bennett Teates & Jon Fulcher

We should invite these individuals to attend or send a representative to the soft PDC meetings.

Bennett Teates, the Executive Director of Blacksburg Operations, VT-ARC (VT- Applied Research Corporation) has inquired about our current ability to support S/MIME (encrypted email). Their need for S/MIME is not urgent however he has expressed an interest in the Soft PDC project and might be a good candidate to participate as an early adopter in one of our pilots early next year. Contact info for Bennett is: Work: 540 443-8577, bteates@vt-arc.org
