  • Issues raised related to Active Directory and CAS updates. AD update *could* have been announced more in advance, but this was done in anticipation of an audit concern. The CAS update was a security patch and is outside of scope for this group, but the information that was shared was useful and appreciated.
    • Added on 11/10/10:
      From Kim Homer: The Active Directory security update that took place this weekend causes Mac Safari not to work on Hokies SelfService and other related web pages. Apparently Mac SSL is behind the times.
      Please advise Hokies SelfService users to choose Chrome or Firefox instead. 
  • Facilities: Full load generator test. Tentatively scheduled for 12/05/10, Sunday starting at 6am and most likely complete by 6:30am.
    • Doorway to new structure is being cut through to the Data Center today. Security will be maintained, and dust will be minimized.
    • New roof work will begin on November 22nd. All old loose gravel will be vacuumed then new work will begin. Approximately 3 weeks of work will be required; tentative date of December 17th for finish. Facilities staff will be on site at all times. 
    • Environmental monitoring PM scheduled for December 3rd. No impact on users is expected.
  • BlackBoard will officially be disabled for all access on December 1, 2010 at 5pm. Database will be migrated in about a week, then the machine will be wiped and probably be redeployed as a backup server.
  • CNS: Network changes between now and just after the first of the 2011 year as it stands today.
    Tuesday November 9: Basketball practice facility Gigabit Ethernet upgrade.
    Thursday November 11: Possibly start 10Gigabit Ethernet optics in the core routers upgrades during normal maintenance windows
    Week of November 15 – 19: continue/finish 10Gig core upgrades
    The week of Thanksgiving we have several planned maintenance events for the network:
    Monday November 22:  Machine-room MLX code upgrades
    Tuesday November 23: Shanks switch-room Sup720 upgrade for the core 6509 there
    Wednesday November 24: Math Emporium 6509 install
    December 17, 2010 – January 14, 2011:
        - We will be upgrading the MLX power feeds and upgrading the fan-trays
        - Upgrading the Server-Iron code (Load Balancers)
        - 10Gigabit Ethernet connections to the Data-Center
        - move IPv6 routing from sha-7301-1 to sha-6509-1 (Sup720 upgrade is a pre-requisite – Nov 23)
        - Possibly start IPv6 renumbering in the core
  •  Enterprise Systems/DBAA: Just a reminder from DBAA of the Oracle/banner upgrades on Nov 13/14.  This was reported at the previous SAMS meting.
    • Note: Password changes for ORACLE will be affected from this point forward as case sensitivity will be engaged. 
    • DBAA will be upgrading the following databases to Oracle 11g on Saturday Nov. 13 and Sunday Nov. 14.

      - The maintenance will be from 6am on Saturday, Nov. 13 to 3pm on Sunday, Nov. 14.
       
      *Shibboleth will be unavailable from 6am – 12noon on Saturday, Nov. 13.
       
      **MyVT will be unavailable from 6am – 12noon on Nov 13 and will only have some of its functionality affected during the duration of the maintenance.
       
      In addition to the Oracle upgrade new release of banner, SQR, and COBOL will be applied to the banner and vtfbanner databases.

The database server Robin will be rebooted in preparation for the Nov 27 drop/add for spring 2011. The following is the announcement that will go out on Tuesday, Nov  16:
