NI&S Data Center: 

Due to limited response on any particular date for the Data Center maintenance that requires reloading the MLX switches, the network engineers would like to put forth December 28th, 2016 between 5:00 AM and 6:00 AM as a possible date and time for the maintenance. Each MLX chassis will be configured and reloaded separately giving the switch time to recover before the next switch is configured and reloaded. The suggested order of operation is to start with MLX-3, then move to MLX-2, then finally MLX-1. The lab tests have proven to be successful and not very time consuming, however additional time for the production devices are expected due to the number of blades in each chassis. Even with expanded time allowances it is expected that the entire maintenance operation will be completed by  6:00 AM. (There may be other network maintenance the same morning that extends beyond this but are not related to the Data Center portion. This activity will be announced through VT-DNET.)
This maintenance is necessary to provide IPv6 services requested in order to support some offerings of Microsoft cloud applications. After this maintenance the MLX switches will be able to support IPv6 in VRFs (Virtual Routed Interfaces).
  • December 28th was rejected due to the end of year giving options. January 8th, 2017 is preferred by Enterprise Systems. Impact on ARC maintenance will be verified, but seems doubtful. 5am to 6am is still the time.
  • DNS impacts will be when MLX 3 is taken down. MLX 3 will be first. (Will be shutdown in reverse order 3, 2, then 1)

 

 

Enterprise Systems:

Banner installs on the 8th also after DC Network maintenance is completed. 

Survey.vt.edu will be deprecated by end of calendar year. 

 

SIS: 

General announcement: Reorg notes; all development is now under Daniel Fisher. Testing is under Brian's area, so production items will be pushed by Daniel's team, but Brian will coneinue to attend. 

 

NI&S:

The new IP network described below has completed testing and will be rolled out to the entire campus in early January 2017.

An additional IP network (172.29.0.0/16) will be placed in service on or after October 11, 2016, to accommodate demand for wireless network access.

Data Center: 

Reminder: Generator and UPS maintenance will be held this Sunday (12/18) from 8am to 9am. Transfers will be conducted as well. From 9am 'til whenever (usually 3-4 hours) UPS maintenance will be performed. During that time UPS will be on bypass. Manual switchover to generators will be conducted during this time. 

 

IT A&P: 

Reminder: Scholar will be taken down at the end of the Spring semester. This is causing a lot more activity for transfer to other sources for document and project related files. Team Drive may help some, but cannot be offered to members outside of the VT.EDU domain. 

 

NI&S Application Mgmt: 

VT Alerts maintenance scheduled for January 11th, 2017 5am to 6am. Overall service is still mostly available even during this time of maintenance.

 

NI&S UAS: 

ARC outage begins January 3rd for all systems. Target end date is January 9th, but systems will be released to users as they finish. OS upgrades, storage upgrades and adds, some cabling will be done during this time. Reservation has been set so jobs will finish and new jobs will be held until completion. 

 

ITEE: 

4Help Service Center will still monitor tickets during the furlough, especially for tickets related to Winter Session. Christmas Day will be handled like Thanksgiving Day.

 

ITSO:

Some interest in making RPZ DNS the default. Still in discussion stage.

LDAP DUO; ED-AUTH going away soon. June 30, 2017 will no longer answer queries. Non-CAS DUO committee will be reaching out to provide insight and additional information. 

Request to keep admins informed about apps still using this facility can be provided by ITSO or Middleware. Perhaps once per week.
