SAMS meeting: 14sep2016

Mike Moyer chairing in place of William Dougherty

Attendees: Lucas Sullivan, Richard Quintin, Brian E. Jones, Tim Rhodes, Steve Cox, Laurie Zirkle, Brian Long, Brad Tilley (phone)

Brian Long:

ED update 9/20/16: Tuesday update instead of usual Monday for ED because Mike Hosig needs to do a table update and he’s out on Monday.  Generally, ED updates are not very noticeable (usually individual sessions may be broken as servers are bounced), but the database update might make that different this time as persistent data will be unavailable.  One hour reserved but should be shorter

Login update this morning.  Reports that some issues, maybe related, but not fully diagnosed yet.  Concerns that it may have been an issue with F5 LB.  Brian will follow up with SAMS list.

Going around the room:

  1. Richard: Robin shutdown listed on SAMS calendar for tomorrow is not accurate: it is neither tomorrow, nor is Robin being shut down (though, some processes will be migrated from Robin to other servers).
  2. Steve: CCS probably patching this weekend.  Multiple critical updates from Microsoft this month.
  3. Tim: Thursday morning taking a stab at migrating BigBrother/VTTrack front-end.
    1. Also ARC outage next week, 9/28/16.  Date may have been incorrectly stated at ARC-NIS meeting on Tuesday.  Will add to SAMS calendar.
  4. Brian E. Jones: BAR maintenance originally scheduled for yesterday will happen tomorrow morning.  Much of campus to be impacted.
  5. Brad: Restricted DNS (secure DNS) going into place in October.
    1. Mail relay reminder.  Any issues?  Richard says yes: limit changes were not announced and broke some things.
        • Discussion ensued.
        • Consensus view is that Friday is too soon for next round of SMTP changes (smtp.vt.edu not relaying to non-vt.edu domains).
        • Mike will follow-up with William on current status/plans and update SAMS group.
